Climate-ABC: Ozone

Ozone is a colorless, toxic gas. The cycles behind ozone formation and decomposition are out of balance due to anthropogenic influences. The problem is a high proportion of ozone in the troposphere and a too low proportion in the stratosphere.

In the earth’s atmosphere there is a lot of ozone (stratospheric ozone), which protects us from UV radiation. Greenhouse gases dissolve the compounds of the ozone molecule. Thus the ozone layer becomes more permeable.
Ozone is also found near the ground, i.e. in the air we breathe (tropospheric ozone). Even in low concentrations it is harmful to health. Air pollution increases the amount of ozone in the air we breathe and the health risk increases.
